أضع بين يدي القارئ والمختص العلمي (معجم الكلمات المصطلحية في لسان العرب: الحيوان والنبات)، لاحقاً لسميِّه في كلمات (الطب والعلوم والعمارة والجغرافية والجيولوجية والصناعة) الذي صدر عام (2007) عن مجمع اللغة العربية بدمشق، ويمكن أن يُعَدّ هذا المعجم مكملاً له في هذين الحقلين.
يجيء هذا العمل كسابقه، تلبية لمطالب المختصِّين العلميِّين والمعرِّبين بأن تُجْرَد المصطلحات أو الكلمات القابلة للإصطلاح من كتب التراث اللغوي، وتوضع بين يدي الباحثين، لعلهم واجدون من بينهما بغيتهم في ترجمة الكلمات أو المصطلحات الأجنبية وَوَضْعِ مقابلاتٍ عربية لها، أو في دراسة البيئة الطبيعية والإجتماعية في بلاد العرب.
فقد عمَدْنا إلى تصنيف كلمات الحيوان والنبات، كلٌ في باب، ثم قصدنا إلى توزيع الباب على فصول، وقسَّمنا الفصل أقساماً، وربما شَعَّبْنا القسم إلى فروع، كل ذلك بحسب الحقل الدلالي للمادة اللغوية، ثم بحسب الترتيب الألفبائي داخل الحقل الدلالي الواحد، فإذا عقدنا فصلاً لأنواع الحيوان، قسَّمناه إلى حيوانات أهليَّة وسباع وطيور وأسماك... وإذا أقمنا فصلاً لأنواع النبات قَسَمناه بين أشجار وأعشاب وخضراوات وورود...
