قام هذا العمل على مسح شامل للمادة اللغوية في معجم (لسان العرب) وإصطفاء الكلمات التي هي مَظنَّةٌ للإصطلاح أولاً، ثم ترتيبها معجميّاً، وذلك بتصنيفها ألفبائيّاً في أبواب وفصول.
وقد خُصَصْت كلمات كل علم أو تقانة ببابٍ، ثم خصص كُلَّ فرع من ذلك العلم أو التقانة بفصل، كما قسّم الفصل أقساماً بحسب الحقل الدلالي الذي يمكن أن تُرَدَّ إليه كلماته، إذا دعت الحاجة إلى ذلك، فكان محتوى هذا العمل المعجمي كما يلي: الباب الأول: كلمات الطب، الباب الثاني: كلمات العلوم، الباب الثالث: كلمات العمارة، الباب الرابع: كلمات الجغرافية والجيولوجية والفلك، الباب الخامس: كلمات الصناعة والتقانة.
