إن أهمية الاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة تكمن في الدور الذي تمارسه على النمو والتنمية في البلاد المضيفة كما أنها تحمل معها خصائص الاقتصاد النابعة منه. ونظرًا لأهميته، أصبحت كفاءة النظام الاقتصادي لدولة ما تقاس بمدى قدرته على جنب الاستثمارات الأجنبية.
ومن هنا تهدف فكرة هذه الدراسة إلى هدفين هما: بيان الوسيلة الأمثل لحماية الاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة هذا هو الهدف الأول، وبيان الوسيلة الأكثر فعالية لتسوية المنازعات الخاصة بالاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة وذلك لما تتمتع به من طبيعة خاصة تختلف عن باقي المنازعات لما بها من تفاوت من المراكز القانونية لطبيعة عقد الاستثمار الذي ترتبط به الدولة المضيفة مع المستثمر الأجنبي وهو الهدف الثاني.
ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة محل البحث، نستعرض البحث في باب تمهيدي وثلاث أبواب. تناول الباب التمهيدي دراسة: "ماهية الاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة وآثارها الاقتصادية على اقتصاديات الدول المضيفة"، وتناول الباب الأول دراسة: حماية الاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة، وتناول الباب الثاني: دور التحكيم التجاري الدولي في تسوية منازعات الاستثمار، وتناول الباب الثالث: دراسة: التحكيم الوسيلة المثلى لتسوية منازعات الاستثمار.
