يستهدف هذا المؤلف تبيان البناء الإجتماعي للمصنع، وذلك أن هذه الدراسة تعطي صورة واضحة للحياة الإجتماعية داخل المصنع، والأدوار التي يقوم بها الأفراد، والجماعات التي ينتمي إليها، وتأثير المجتمع الصناعي على شخصية الإنسان، وما يتعرض له من ضغوط في مواقف العمل المختلفة.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى أحد عشر فصلاً يتناول الفصل الأول مفهوم المصطلحات المستخدمة، وهي المجتمع، والذي يمثل الموضوع الأساسي في علم الإجتماع، كما يمثل متغيراً تابعاً في هذا الكتاب. ويصف مصطلح التصنيع حالة الدولة التي تأخذ بسياسة التنمية الإجتماعية والإقتصادية، ويتناول الفصل الثاني علم الإجتماع الصناعي حيث ينظر إلى التصنيع بإعتباره ظاهرة إجتماعية، إذ يعد سياسة ينتهجها المجتمع لنفسه إقتصادياً وإجتماعياً، كما أن تبني المجتمع لسياسة التصنيع له نتائجه على البناء الإجتماعي والثقافي، ويلقي الفصل الثالث الضوء على البناء الإجتماعي للمصنع، ويناقش الفصل الرابع العلاقة والتأثيرات المتبادلة بين الصناعة والمجتمع المحلي، أما الفصل الخامس فيلقى الضوء على التصنيع والبناء الإجتماعي.
ويحمل الفصل السادس عنواناً هو "التصنيع والتنظيم، وتناول الفصل السابع "التنظيم والعمليات الإجتماعية"، إذ أشار إلى العلاقة بين التصنيع والتعاون، والتنافس، والصراع، والتوافق، والتكيف الإجتماعي، والتكامل الإجتماعي، أما الفصل الثامن فيتناول "التصنيع والطبقة الاجتماعية" وبدأ الفصل بتعريف مصطلح الطبقة الإجتماعية، ثم أشار إلى ارتباط الصناعة بالترتيب الطبقي، حيث يتعرض المجتمع في انتقاله من طابع ما قبل الصناعة إلى الطابع الصناعي إلى تغيرات طبقية في البناء الطبقي.
ويشير الفصل التاسع إلى "التصنيع والتغير الإجتماعي"، ويلقى الفصل العاشر الضوء على مشكلات الصناعة، ويتناول الفصل الحادي عشر والأخير الخدمة الإجتماعية في المصانع.
