تساءل بعض علماء الاجتماع؟ من هو المؤسس الحقيقى لعلم الاجتماع؟ هل هو عبد الرحمن بن خلدون العربى المسلم, أم أوجست كونت الفرنسى؟ ونحاول فى صفحات هذا الكتاب أن نجيب على هذا السؤال.
وتبدو أهمية هذا الكتاب فى تبيان أن ابن خلدون قد أدخل فى علم الاجتماع أبحاثا تتعلق بعلوم متعددة كالتاريخ الطبيعى وعلم السياسة, وعلم الاقتصاد, والجغرافيا, كما كانت له إسهامات فى نظرية المعرفة واتسمت كتاباته بالطابع الاجتماعى والأنثروبولوجى المميز.
ويستهدف الكتاب إظهار أن ابن خلدون قد سبق علماء الغرب بقرابة أربعمائة وخمسين عاما كاملة فى إنشاء علم الاجتماع, إذ له الفضل فى السبق بالمناداة بعلم الاجتماع من حيث التوقيت الزمنى, فقد نادى برأيه فى القرن الرابع عشر الميلادى, بينما كونت الذى ينسب إليه البعض فضل إرساء هذا العلم, أدلى برأيه فى القرن التاسع عشر.
وقد سلك المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب المنهج المقارن, فقارن بين كل فكرة أوردها ابن خلدون بمثيلتها عند أوجست كونت, وأستخدم المؤلف فى تأليف هذا الكتاب واحدا بعد المائة مرجعا, منها واحد وستون مرجعا عربيا, واثنا عشر مرجعا أجنبيا "مترجما" وثمانية وعشرون مرجعا أجنبيا, وقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة عشر فصلا.
