وفي أطول قضية لاجئين في التاريخ الحديث، يجد اللاجئون أنفسهم عالقين بين المنفى والإغتراب بصفتهم "غير مواطنين" في الدول المضيفة.
يفتح هذا الكتاب الذي ساهم في وضع فصوله فريق من الباحثين الفلسطينيين والأجانب، آفاقاً مهمة جديدة للبحث، كاشفاً النقاب عن مصطلحات جديدة تخصّ اللاجئين والهجرة ودراسات الشتات، والترابُط الموجود بين المتخيلات الإثنية والطائفية والتهجير المعاصر.
وهو يعالج ما يخلّفه وضع اللاجئين الفلسطينيين القانوني في البلدان المضيقة من أثر عليهم، ويتفحص بشكل أكثر تحديداً كيف يشكّلهم هذا الوضع ويصنّفهم ويجعلهم ينظرون إلى أنفسهم كمنفيّين، ذلك المنفى المطوّل الذي يؤدي إلى ولادة ممارسات ومفاهيم إجتماعية وثقافية جديدة، مثل أهمية الذاكرة وإعادة صوغ مفهوم العائلة، والهويات الذاتية الجديدة.
