نحن في هاتين القصتين الطويلتين في بدايات بلزاك وبحثه عن طريقه إلى الرواية وهذه ستكون دراسة لطبائع البشر في باريس وفي الأرياف... وفي حياتهم الخاصة أو العاطفية. (الحفلة الراقصة في سو -جانب من باريس- هي بمثابة إطار عام شعبي يلتقي فيه النبلاء وأبناء الشعب، الأثرياء والفقراء الحاضر والماضي... وأيضاً بطلا الرواية اللذان سيتزوجان ولن يكون زاجهما موفقاً. تلك كانت بداية البرجوازية في الربع الأول من القرن التاسع عشر ومعها الصراع الذي لا ينتهي بين الحب والمال. خلاصة المحفظة أن شاباً ينسى محفظته عند صبايا كان يرتاد بيتهن مع آخرين للقمار. ويسأل الشاب الأخت الكبرى عن محفظته فتنكر أن تكون بقيت عندها مما يثير الشك بأخلاق صديقاته. والواقع أن الأخت الكبرى جعلت من المحفظة نموذجاً لمحفظة أخرى مرصعة بحبات الزهر. الهدية الثمينة هذه كانت بداية تعارف عاطفي فحب فزواج.
