هذا الكتاب محاولة لتقديم الأسس العامة للبحث التاريخي والمقارن في اللغة العربية، ويقوم هذا الكتاب على النظرية العامة لعلم اللغة الحديث من جانب وعلى الاهتمام بالتراث اللغوي العربي من الجانب الآخر. فإذا كان علم اللغة الحديث قد حقق بمناهجه الدقية تقدماً ملحوظاً في مجالاته المختلفة، فإن الإفادة من وضوح الرؤية ودقة المناهج التي طورها علم اللغة في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين قد أصبحت ضرورة علمية. لقد شغل عدد من الباحثين بدراسة المحو المقارن السامية، وأتاح هذا المنهاج رؤية جديدة للعربية في ضوء اللغات السامية. واهتم كثير من الباحثين في اللغات المختلفة بقضية التأريخ اللغوية، وما يزال البحث في اللغة العربية بحاجة إلى جهود كثيرة تفيد من كل المصادر المتاحة لإيضاح الجوانب المختلفة من تاريخ اللغة العربية. وهدف هذا الكتاب أن يقدم للدارسين والطلاب في صورة مركزة الملامح العامة والمعلومات الأساسية للبحث العلمي في اللغة العربية في ضوء النظرية الحديثة لعلم اللغة العام وعلم اللغات السامية المقارن والتراث العربي.
