تعتبر الثورة الإسلامية التي أطاحت نظام الشاه في إيران، من اكثر الثورات درامية في التاريخ الحديث، وأكثرها فرادة في تميّز حدوثها وجذور دوافعها، حيث كان الداخل الإيراني أصل الثورة ومُنجِزَها الوحيد، ففي معظم الثورات الأخرى، كان للقوى الخارجية، لا سيما الجيوش الغازية صاحبة المصلحة، دورٌ ما في تحطيم النظام القديم، وهو ما غالب عن حالة إيران، والتي لعبت فيها القوى الداخلية، من دون أي عون أو تدخل خارجي.
يصبح هدف البحث هنا، هو إستقصاء وتحليل الأسباب البنيوية للثورة، بالعودة إلى جذور تكوّنها في العقود الثلاثة التي قضاها الشاه على "عرش الطاووس"، ومآل التجاذب في علاقاته بين واقع البلاد في الداخل، والعلاقات الإقليمية في محيط الخليج، والتشابكات في المصالح مع الدول الأخرى ذات التأثير المباشر، كالإتحاد السوفياتي وبريطانيا أولاً، ثم الولايات المتحدة بشكل أساسي وحاسم.
هذا الكتاب يسعى لتسليط الضوء على العلاقات الإيرانية - الأميركية خلال فترة مهمة من تاريخ التحولات الداخلية في إيران، وإنعكاساتها على علاقاتها الخارجية، لا سيما مع الغرب عموماً، والولايات المتحدة الأميركية على وجه الخصوص، في ظل هيمنة العولمة المتوحشة والدور الأميركي القيادي المتفرد فيها، وهو ما يفسر نقطة إنطلاق البحث من بداية عهد الشاه، ثم الحراك الثوري وإنتصار الثورة الإسلامية في إيران عام 1979 كمفصل إنقلابي بالكامل لمسار علاقات طهران مع الخارج وعلى إمتداد ثلاثة عقود تفردت فيها الولايات المتحدة بقيادة العالم وفق مشيئتها ومسار مصالحها.
