تعتبر العلاقات الإيرانية - السورية من أمتن العلاقات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط منذ أن أعلنت سوريا وقوفها إلى جانب إيران في حربها ضد العراق عام 1980م، فعلى عكس العديد من العلاقات الإقليمية التي تراوحت تطوراتها بين التباعد والإنسجام عرفت العلاقات الإيرانية السورية نوعاً من التوافق والإستمرارية الدائمة في جل مراحلها التاريخية، حيث أبرز العديد من الباحثين خصوصية هذه العلاقات التي لم تعرف أي إنقطاع رغم العلاقات التي لم تعرف أي انقطاع رغم التحولات التي عرفتها جل البنى الداخلية للدولتين، حيث شهدت العلاقات تحولاً كبيراً بعد تعثر عملية السلام؛ وتوقيف المفاوضات بين سوريا وإسرائيل عام 1996.
وقد حالت مبادئ وأسس القاعدي لهذه العلاقة دون إنهيارها في مواجهة الخلافات والظروف المحيطة بالطرفين، حيث امتدت المبادئ المؤسسة لتطال عدة جوانب سياسية وإقتصادية وعسكرية وثقافية، مما ساعد البلدين على تخطي كل العراقيل والأزمات والمشاريع التي كانت تستهدف خلق صدع بين البلدين.
تمر المنطقة اليوم بمرحلة من الأزمات والتحولات الكبيرة طال أثرها بما لا يدع مجالاً للشك كلا البلدين، إلا أن الدولتان تعاطينا مع هذه الأزمات بصيغة مختلفة بناءاً على مصالحهما، وتعتبر الأزمة السياسية في سوريا من أهم التحولات التي حدثت وما زالت تحدث في المنطقة والتي تعتبر من بعد الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي من أعقد الأزمات التي أصابت المنطقة عموماً، والإتفاق النووي الإيراني أحد أهم الأمثلة والمنعطفات المهمة في تاريخ العلاقات الإيرانية - السورية، حيث قامت كل من سوريا وإيران بمحاولة التصدي لهذه الأزمات بتوسيع دائرة تحالفهما لتشمل العراق وتأسيس محور المقاومة الذي من خلاله فرضا تهديداً للمشاريع الغربية في المنطقة، مما يدل على أن إيران وسوريا مهمتان لبعضهما البعض في التوازن الإستراتيجي الذي استطاعا أن يستعيداه بعد رجوع روسيا كلاعب وشريك أساسي لكلا الطرفين، حيث أصبح هذا التحالف من أكبر القوى الإقليمية في المنطقة والتي تسعى القوى الإقليمية المنافسة له للقضاء عليه حفاظاً على موازين القوى في المنطقة بشكل يصب في مصالحهم بما يمنع ظهور قوة جديدة هناك.
