اعتمد السهيلي في وضع منهجية كتابه: (نتائج الفِكَّر في النحو) على منهجية كتاب: (الجُمَل) المنسوب للفراهيدي، حيث اتخذ المنهجية نفسها، والترتيب، كونه الكتاب المتداول بين طلاب العلم خلال تلك الحقبة، وأسلوبه أقرب إلى أذهان طلاب العلم، بل إنه نُسِبَ إلى السهيلي كتابٌ في الجمل، ولعل من نسَبَ إليه الجمل قصَدَ نتائج الفِكر.
جارى السهيلي النحاة في بعض أقوالهم، كما كان ناقداً واضحاً في نحوه، حيثُ شارك النحاة، وتعقب آراءهم، وعارضهم، كما امتاز بتفرده بآرائه، وشارك المتقدمين في كثير منها، حيث مازجَ بين المذهبين البصري، والكوفي، وكان أميلَ إلى المذهب الأول، وليس ذلك إلا أثراً من أثار اجتهاده، وتفانيه في إكتساب العلم، حيث إنه لم يقتصر على علمٍ واحد، فنتائج الفِكر في النحو، والروض الأنف في السيرة، وكتاب الفرائض في أصول المواريث، وأصحاب الفرائض، وغيرها كثير، وكل منها فيه دليل على ذلك، ولا يتجاوز الحديث إلى ما اختصَّ به غيره.
عرض السهيلي الأدوات في صورة تختلف عن أسلوب من سبقوه في عرضها، أمثال أبي البركات الأنباريّ، والعْكّبريّ، فكان يُمهد للمسألة بموقفه من اللغة، ورأيه فيها بأسلوب يمتاز بالجدة في التناول والطرح، ومعلومٌ أنّ ما زاد في المبنى له أثر في المعنى.
إن نحو ابن القيّم (751هـ) في (بدائع الفوائد) هو نحو السهيلي في نتائج الفِكّر نفسه، كما أن له أثراً واضحاً في مغني اللبيب لابن هشام، وفي غيرهما من مؤلفات اللغة، التي أفاد منها علماء كُثُر.
كان السهيلي يعرض آراء الخليل في الجُمَل وغيره من العلماء، ثم يفصّل إجمال أقوالهم فيقربها إلى ذهن المتلقي من خلال عرض الخلافات، والأقيسة، والتعليلات.
