عند ظهور هذا الكتاب فى طبعته الأولى عام 1986 ، كانت الأرض أكثر دفئا من معدل الحرارة فى القرن العشرين ، وخلال هذه الفترة ارتفع معدل درجة الحرارة عالميا نحو نصف درجة مئوية.
عصر الهولوسين يمدنا بقرينة حيوية تغطى زمنا طويلا من ارتفاع درجة حرارة المناخ الحالى ، وليس أخيرا فإن الهولوسين يخبرنا أن الكوكب يتحرك نحو أرض لم تكن معلومة ، حقيقة أن الإنسان له دخل فى تغير المناخ أوجدت استجابة علمية ، وبالذات منذ إنشاء lpcc عام 1988 ، لكنه لم يأخذ كثيرا من الإجماع السياسى.
وبالنظر إلى إدراك طبيعة الحادثة بعد وقوعها ، فإن التغير الكبير الذى يحدث فى نظام الأرض واضح للعيان ، حتى لو لم يكن ظاهرا فى وقته ، إلى أين نحن ذاهبون فى العقود القادمة!؟
