لنبدأ بطرح السؤال التالي: كيف نتصوَّر أن يكون المجتمع والدولة في الكويت من دون الجماعات الشيعية؟ ماذا لو لم يوجد شيعة في الكويت، هل ستُحل إشكالية الهويّات الفرعية والهوية الوطنية؟... وهل سوف تنعم الكويت أو دول الخليج العربي بديمقراطية ومواطنة كاملة؟... هل سيكون السور قادراً على حماية المجتمع من الإنفلات السياسي والإجتماعي، وهو السور الذي ضمَّ مكوّنات المجتمع الكويتي وحماهم من أخطار الخارج ووطَّد العلاقات البيئية بينهم منذ البدايات الأولى لتأسيس دولة المدنية؟... ولماذا انهار سور دولة المدنية عندما ولدت الدولة الأمة ودوَّنت لها دستوراً كان يُعَدُّ الحلقة الأكثر حداثةً وتقدَّماً على سائر دول المنطقة؟... وهل أعطت الدولة الأمة حصانةً للمجتمع أكثر مما أعطاها السور الأول والسور الثاني والسور الثالث لدولة المدنية؟...
يحاول الكاتب الإجابة على هذه الأسئلة الشائكة والعميقة كما أن اختيار الجماعات الشيعية في هذه الدراسة لا يعني عدم إندراج الجماعات الأخرى، سواء كانت مذهبية أو قبلية أو عرقية، فالإخفاق الذي ترصده الدراسة ربما طال أغلب الجماعات التي يتشكِّل منها المجتمع في الكويت، الأمر الذي يعني أهمية القيام بدراساتٍ أخرى تبحث في إستراتيجيات تلك الجماعات وهوياتها الفرعية، وكيف بُنيت علاقاتها مع الهوية الوطنية، وما هي مناطق التوتر القائمة التي يمكن أن تتفجر في أيَّ مفصل تاريخيَّ.
