أحداث الربيع العربي كانت حافزاً قوياً ومؤثراً أساسياً في حركة الإحتجاج في 14 فبراير، إلا أن ثمّة خصوصية تطبع ربيع البحرين في بُعدين أساسيين وهما:
البعد الأول: حجم العنف الذي مورس ضد المحتجين مقارنة بالدول الإخرى. وقد مورس القمع الحكومي مقروناً بسياسة بغيضة قامت على الفرز الطائفي، وعلى كافة المستويات.
البعد الثاني: استمرارية الإحتجاجات وعدم توقفها تصل هذه الإستمرارية بعمقها التاريخي إلى ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي، ووصولاً إلى مرحلة الإستقلال، وحتى ما بعد ميثاق العمل الوطني 2001، وانتهاءً بحركة الإحتجاج في 14 فبراير 2011.
هذا الكتاب يحاول فحص مبدأ المواطنة الدستورية في الفترة التي سبقت حدث 14 فبراير، وكيف أدّى غياب، أو ضبابية، هذا المفهوم إلى ترسيخ سياسة الفرز الطائفي، وبناء شبكات زبائنية خاصة بنظام الحكم.
