لا يتعدى عمرٌ تعبير "الشيعة العرب" ربع قرن من الزمان، وكانت اللحظات التي جرى إستعمالُ هذا التعبير فيها لحظات إحتدام سياسي في منطقة المشرق العربي وجواره، فكان التعبيرُ - من ثم تعبيراً سياسياً، يبتغي أن يبيّن أن هؤلاء ليسوا جزءاً من جسم شيعي موحد، أو طائفة شيعية عابرة للحدود.
وتحديداً، كان المراد من تعبير "الشيعة العرب" تبيان أنهم ليسوا جزءاً من التصور النمطي الذي عمّمته إيران الإسلامية عن الشيعة.
لذلك، كان أول من استعمل هذا التعبير عدد من الناشطين السياسيين الشيعة، بقصد حثّ الولايات المتحدة على أن تتبنّى الشيعة بوصفهم حلفاء.
وقد كان "الشيعة العرب" في كل ذلك، رهاناً، وكان تعبير "الشيعة العرب" يخفي وراءه رغبوية سياسية.
أما تعبير "الشيعة العرب"، على نحو ما يُستعمل في هذا الكتاب، فلا يتضمن غائية محددة، إذ يشير إلى مجموعة ذات هوية متمايزة، يستند حراكها الإجتماعي والسياسي إلى هذه الهوية، سواء كان هذا أمراً واعيّاً لدى هذه الجماعة ويعبّر عنه خطابياً، أم لا.
وما يحاوله هذا الكتاب - من ثم - هو إعادة هذا المفهوم إلى الفضاء الأكاديمي المحض.
