يفتن الناس دائماً بسحر الأمور الغريبة التي تجرى على نسق غير مألوف، ولكن علم النفس المرضي - بوصفه دراسة علمية للسلوك الشاذ - ليس مجرد دراسة للغريب الشاذ فحسب، بل هو جزء من أحد فروع المعرفة الأوسع مجالاً وهو علم النفس، إذ هو في حد ذاته جزء من الاساس النظري لكثير من المهن المعترف بها رسمياً.
وإذا كان لهذا الكتاب من هدف تعليمي فإنه يقوم بتزويد قارئه بوعي وادراك لتنوع الموضوعات التي يغطيها تحت عنوان (علم النفس المرضي) ، كما ييسر له القيام بمقارنة وتقييم ناقدين للمناحي التي سلكها العلماء في تعاملهم مع مشكلات السلوك الشاذ وعلاجه، فهو كتاب يؤثر تصور المبادئ الأساسية وتفهمها - وبخاصة التعريفات - على السرد المفصل لاضرابات معينة وما يستلزمه من طرق علاجية بحيث يؤكد على المفاهيم الثابتة بالبرهان والدليل لا على الموضوعات الرائجة مؤخراً.
والكتاب ثمرة ما يربو بقليل على أثنى عشر عاماً من العمل والجهد، ففي فصل الخريف من عام 1967 م ألقيت على عاتقي مسئولية أعداد مقرر دراسي في علم النفس لأقوم بتدريسه لطلاب السنة الثالثة من أحدى كليات جامعة (سيمون فريزر)، ولقد تغيرت محتوياته وأهدافه تدريجياً من خلال القيام بالإجراءات التالية أثناء تدريسه: فلقد طلبت من كل مجموعة من الطلاب الذين تكبدوا عناء دراسته أن يبدوا رأيهم فيه بذكر الموضوعات التي كانوا يتمنون دراستها من خلاله لو أنه أشتمل عليها، والموضوعات التي تمنوا حذفها منه وعدم الزامهم بدراستها، والموضوعات التي رأوا تخصيص وقت أقل أو أكثر لمناقشتها ودراستها، بالإضافة الى تفكيري فيما ينبغي اللجوء اليه من طرق لتحسين هذا المقرر وتطويره إلى الأفضل... ولم ينته الأمر بهذا الكتاب إلى ما هو عليه حتى خريف عام 1974م، حين تم تطوير هذا المقرر بوصفه برنامجاً يستقل الطالب بدراسته معتمداً على نفسه مما استوجب جعل أهدافه التعليمية بينة واضحة بعد أن كانت ضمنية مضمرة، وبما أدى به في النهاية إلى أن يصبح كلا مترابطاً على نحو منطقي متماسك.
