إنّها تزوّد القارئ بالمعلومات عن نواح مختلفةٍ من الحياة اليوميّة، من مثل الأسعار والعلاقات بين أفراد الديانات المختلفة والحبّ والحياة الإجتماعيّة والترفيه، تشكل هذه اليوميّات مصدراً غنيّاً للتاريخ الإجتماعيّ، الثقافيّ الفلسطينيّ. - عصام نصّار، أستاذ التاريخ في جامعة إيلينوي الحكوميّة.
كتب سامي يوميّاته في أواخر سنيّ مراهقته وبداية عشرينيّات عمره، وقد اختار لها عنواناً مناسباً ولائقاً: معركة الحياة، ويكون بهذا العنوان قد جمع ما بين الأجواء السياسيّة في فلسطين في سنوات إنجلاء الإنتداب البريطانيّ، وما بين تلاطم الأفراح والمشاكل في حياة عائلة عمرو.
تطفح هذه التدوينات، على مدى السنوات الأربع التي كتبت فيها، بتأمّلات شابّ من الخليل كاشفةً تفاصيل الحياة اليوميّة في خضم تحوّلاتٍ كبيرةٍ شهدتها بلاده؛ ففي وصفه للعام والخاصّ، للحديث وللتقليديّ، يتفكّر سامي بعلاقاته، وبموقعه من الحياة، وبغيرها من التجارب الحياتيّة الكونيّة، وذلك من خلال إشراكه لنا بالعديد من التفاصيل في لحظةٍ زمنيّةٍ هامة.
تقوم كيمبرلي كاتز، في هذه الدراسة التي تتقدّم اليوميّات، بتسليط الضوء على كلمات سامي الذي احتفظ بيوميّاته لأكثر من ستين عاماً، والآن، وقد تم نشر هذه الخواطر للقرّاء، فإنّ يوميات سامي عمرو وتجسّر الهوّة الّتي تشوب فهم الغرب لتاريخ الشرق الأوسط.
