يشتمل هذا الكتاب على مجموعة من ثلاث عشرة ورقة بحثية ومحاضرة ألقاها ديفيد مارتن بين عامي 2002 و 2004، في أماكن مختلفة في أوروبا، نقد فيها نظريات العلمنة الكلاسيكية التي كانت تهيمن على علم إجتماع الدين حتى ثمانينيات القرن العشرين.
ويمثل الكتاب إنعكاساً لحالة الدين في العالم الحديث، على الرغم من أنه نشر بإعتباره إنعكاساً للعلمنة، وذلك من لخال وضعها الدين على جدول أعمال البحث الإجتماعي مرة أخرى.
يقدم مارتن مجموعة واسعة من الملاحظات حول السبل المتعددة التي يمكن الأديان والحداثة أن يجتمعوا بها في عالمنا، وبينما يتناول قضايا تتعلق بالقومية وبناء الدولة، فإنه يناقشها في سياق عمليات العولمة الحالية، حيث يركّز على عمل الطوائف عبر الوطنية، ويعالج الأسطورة واللاهوت وعلم الإجتماع، بطريقة يمكن معها فهم خلفية توتر العلاقات الألمانية - الأميركي في إطار الحرب على العراق في عام 2003.
