يتوّج هذا الكتاب تتبُّعًا لصيقًا لكتاب الدين والعلمانية في سياق تاريخي للمفكر العربي عزمي بشارة، من منطلق أنه مشروع يُعيد طرح إشكال العلمانية من زاوية نظر جديدة، ويتزامن مع تحولات عميقة تشهدها الفضاءات السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية العربية، على النحو الذي جعل موضوع العلمانية يبرز مجددًا.
تحاول هذه القراءة في مشروع بشارة الربط بين نُظم المشروع ومداخله وأقسامه، طارحةً تساؤلات منها: هل طرح بشارة موضوع العلمانية حلًا لأزمة الدولة العربية بعد تعاقب مشروعات الدولة الوطنية والقومية والاشتراكية والشمولية؟ أم طرحه بديلًا من مفهوم الدولة المدنية بعد تنامي المد الإسلامي المعتدل والراديكالي؟ أم هي دعوة إلى فهم العلمانية كحل وسط في وجه الصراع الأيديولوجي بين المتدينين وغير المتدينين، بوصفه نوعًا من التأسيس لمبادئ العيش المشترك، بما هو أحد أُسس المجتمع الحديث؟
هذه التجربة المعرفية العميقة مع موضوع حسّاس مثل موضوع العلمانية، خصوصًا في المجتمعات التي تعرف درجة تديّن مرتفعة، وفي الدول التي تتماهى فيها السلطة السياسية مع السلطة الدينية، ستجعل المجتمعات العربية الإسلامية المتدينة والنخب الأصولية المؤدلجة والمؤسسات الدينية التقليدية تُراجع مواقفها التاريخية من العلمانية.
