يستعرض هذا الكتاب انتهاء الفكر الحر في رحلته التاريخية إلى محطة العلمنة وصراعها المستمر في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرون، وبشكل خاص في فرنسا مهد تجربتها الأصيل. وقد رمى المترجم بذلك إلى تقديم الإطار التاريخي-النظري للأخذ المؤقلم بالعلمنة الحيادية في لبنان كحل وحيد أوحد مرتجى في الظروف الحضارية التي نعيش. فقدم بالتالي دراسة تطبيقية في الموضوع شكلت الخطوة الأولى في مشوار العلمنة وندوة أستكملتها، إلى حد ما، بأبعاد مختلف مركبات البناء الفوقي والتحتي للمجتمع اللبناني.
