التقيت به من خلال رفيقي ومرشدي، جون هيوستن، مخرج فيلم عظيم آخر من العصر الذهبي لهوليوود، اشتهر إميليو بإخراجه للفيلم ماريا كانديلاريا (1944)، الذي فاز بجائزة السعفة الذهبية في مهرجان كان السينمائي 1946 وعمل في العديد من الأفلام السينمائية في المكسيك وفي هوليوود، مغامرات في الثورة المكسيكية، وهروبه من السجن ووصوله إلى هيوليوود ليبدأ مهنته السينمائية، هي في حد ذاتها أسطورة.
كان شخصية جسدت كل فضائل ومواهب فنان إبداعي حقيقي، ولقد كان من المشاهير قبل فترة طويلة من لقائي به، لقد كان من دواعي سروري أن أعرفه عن كثب كصديق حقيقي ومرشد وأن أسمع قصته المذهلة بشكل مباشر.
لقد اعتدت في نيويورك تدوين الملاحظات في عملي، لذلك كتبت كل يوم قصص إيميليو بلا هوادة على أجزاء وقطع من الورق.
فكرت في نفسي كمؤلف ناشئ، واعتقدت أنني قد أحتاج في يوم من الأيام إلى هذه الملاحظات كمراجع لمقالة أوروبية.
الآن، مرت سنوات عديدة على تلك الإجتماعات التي لا تُنسى، لكن القصة بقيت سليمة كما أنها تتكشف بسلاسة وبشكل مريح لتشكل هذه الرواية، أعتز بذكريات تلك الفترة السحرية من حياتي وأفتقد صديقي العزيز إميليو وهذه الرواية أهديتها له للذكرى والمحبة.
