يهدف التاريخ دائمًا إلى وضع قانون يفسر الحركة الإنسانية على سطح الأرض على مر الزمان، وخلال المسلمات الثلاث؛ الإنسان ـــ الأرض ـــ الزمن حاول المؤرخين قراءة التاريخ قراءةً فوقية "قراءة من أعلى" بالتركيز على ما يدور وسط غبار المعارك، وذباب السيوف. ولكن هذه القراءة لم تف بالغرض الذي قام من أجله التاريخ، ومن ثم ظهر إتجاه جديد نحو إعادة قراءة ذلك التاريخ، ولكن من أسفل بقراءة حياة المهمشين، وما تجرعوه من مرارة الإهمال التاريخي. وانطلاقًا من ذلك جاءت دراستنا حول الحرف والصناعات والأعمال في الأمثال الشعبية المصرية كجزء من تلك القراءة؛ حيث تعد الأمثال المصرية معينًا هامًا لدراسة تاريخ المجتمع المصري بل وملخصًا لأحداث عجز المؤرخين، وربما خشوا في بعض الآحايين من تدوينها. وهذه دراسة جادة، وإن لم تكن الأولى في بابها، وقد سبقنا في ذلك المنحى البعض مثل العلامة الدكتور/ إبراهيم شعلان، إلا أن ما قمنا به يظل محاولة على الدرب إيمانًا بدورنا في الحفاظ على ما نملكه من تراث أصيل قبل أن يتأثر بمقتضيات الحداثة.
