قد يختلف النقاد في تقديم المضمون الأخلاقي لمسرحية قياساً على مفاهيم الثقافة الأوروبية، ولكن جوته كان أبعد الناس عن أن يسجن نفسه في إطار ثقافة معينة في عصر معين، وإذا كان قد استقى مسرحيته الأولى أمينة أو نزوة العاشق من قصص (ألف ليلة وليلة) فقد عاد بمسرحية "شتيللا" إلى عالمها مرة أخرى وأقام للحب فيها صرحاً لا يبيد.
وتعد مسرحية (أخ وأخت) ذات الفصل الواحد نموذجاً رائعاً للعمل الدرامي القصير الذي خرج إلى الورق في ساعات قليلة من التركيز الإبداعي، والذي دارت أحداثه في مكان محود في سياق كأنه حوار أنشئ لاستخراج ما يعتمل في حنايا النفس الإنسانية أو كأنه حديث ذاتي يفصح عن كل فكر عميق وإحساس صادق.
أما مسرحية (بروميتويس) فتعتبر عن اشتغال جوته بالتراث الإغريقي القديم ومحاولته سبر أغوار النماذج القصصية الشعرية الأسطورية الأولى واستخدامها في التعبير عن أفكار وأحاسيس الإنسان في غير تقيد بالزمان والمكان، ولم تكن شخصية بروميتويس الرمزية هي الشخصية الوحيدة التي اهتم بها، فهناك شخصية موازية لها هي شخصية الشيطان أو مفيستوفيليس التي أقام عليها مسرحية فاوست بأجزائها المختلفة.
