"مسرحية "جوتس فون برليشينجن" حقق فيها جوته نموذجًا عظيمًا لما يمكن أن تؤتى به مدرسة العبقرية أو العاصفة والاندفاع، ووصل بها بضربة واحدة إلى قمة الشهرة فى بلاده أولاً وفى الخارج ثانيًا، واستطاع أن يربط فيها على نحو مثمر بين التراث الشكسبيرى والأدب الألمانى، وأنتج إذ أنتجها مسرحية تاريخية رائدة، فتحت الباب إلى مدرسة تقلدها وتسير فى طريقها، ومدارس تعارضها وتنتج فى حماسها أعمالاً تختلف فى الصيغة ولا تقل فى الأهمية.
أما مسرحية "أورفاوست" فتمثل المرحلة الولى من التعامل الفكرى والفنى مع مادة فاوست، وبعد هذه المسرحية الأولى التى تنتمى إلى مرحلة الشباب نشأت مسرحية فاوست الكبرى، التى ظل جوته يكتبها طوال ستين سنة إبان مرحلة النضج الكلاسيكى، حيث اكتمل الجزء الأول ثم الجزء الثانى.
