غالبًا ما يُنظر إلى رواية فرنكنشتاين على أنها رواية رُعب، وهذا ظلم لعمل أدبيٍّ رفيع يُعتبر من دُرَر الأدب الإنجليزي والعالمي وأكثرها قراءةً في أنحاء العالم، بالإضافة إلى كونها من أكثر النُّصوص الأدبيَّة التي دُرِسَت وحُلِّلَت نظرًا لما تحمله من قيمة أدبية وفكرية رفيعة، ولأنها نصٌ سَلِسٌ ومشوِّق.
لكن مسار هذه الرواية بالتحديد أكثر تعقيدًا من غيرها، فقد طرحت شِلي فيها أفكارًا جريئةً جديدةً بالنسبة لعَصرها عن الإبداع عندما يتخطى حدود الطبيعة. وقد تعاظَم هذا المسار واستقلَّ بشكلٍ ما عن الرواية نفسها، وصار فيحَدّ ذاته نوعًا من المجاز والأسطورة شَقّ لنفسه طريقًا في الفنون الأخرى مثل السينماوالمسرح والكاريكاتور والكومِكس.. وصار اسم فرانكنشتاين مُرادِفًا لكل إبداع عندما يصير هوسًا يَجلِب عواقب وخيمة على المُبدِع والعالم، ومرادفًا للوحشيَّة وقد تحرَّرَت من عِقالها.
يَعرِف الجميع تقريبًا، حتى الذين لم يقرأوا الرواية ولم يَسمَعوا باسم ماري شِلِي، موضوع الحَبكة الرئيسة والأحداث الغريبة التي قاد إليها العالِم الشَّاب الطَّموح الذي يَسعى إلى العثور على سِرّ الحياة ويتوصَّل إليه. ومن أجزاءٍ مُجَمَّعة من جُثَثٍ مختلفةٍ يَصنَع كائنًا عملاقًا يتَّضح أنه وحشٌ قبيحٌ لا تخلو شخصيَّته من مشاعرٍ مُرْهفة.
لكن الذين لم يقرأوا الرواية، أو ظنّوا أنها مجرّد حكاية أسطورية مرعبة، خسروا متعة اكتشاف ذلك الجمال وتلك القوّة في هذا العمل الأدبي الممتع.
