قد يختلف النقاد فى تقديم المضمون الأخلاقى لمسرحية قياسا على مفاهيم الثقافة الأوربية ، ولكن جوته كان أبعد الناس عن أن يسجن نفسه فى إطار ثقافة مينة فى عصر معين ، وإذا كان قد استقى مسرحيتة الأولى أمينة أونزوة العاشق من قصص (ألف ليلة وليلة )؛ فقد عاد بمسرحية "شتيللا " إلى عالمها مرة أخرى وأقام للحب فيها صرحًا لايبيد. وتعد مسرحية (أخ وأخت ) ذات الفصل الواحد نموذجًا رائعًا للعمل الدرامى القصير الذى خرج إلى الورق فى ساعات قليلة من التركيز الإبداعى ، والذى دارت أحداثه فى مكان محدود فى سياق كأنه حوار أنشئ لاستخراج ما يعتمل فى حنيا النفس الإنسانية أو كأنه حديث ذاتى يفصح عن كل فكر عميق وإحساس صادق. أما مسرحية (بروميتوس) فتعبر عن اشتغال جوته بالتراث الإغريقى القديم ومحاولته سبر أغوار النماذج القصصية الشعرية الأسطورية الأولى واستخدامها فى التعبير عن أفكار وأحاسيس الإنسان فى غير تقيد بالزمان والمكان ، ولم تكن شخصية بروميتويس الرمزية هى شخصية الشيطان أومفيستوفيليس التى أقام عليها مسرحية فاوست بأجزائها المختلفة
