لا عجب أن يبدل الجندي في السنة الواحدة رأياً برأي وعاطفة بعاطفة. فالجندي حرّم على نفسه أو حُرّمت عليه كل متعة من متع الدنيا، فلا نزهة ولا راحة ولا حظ له في النوم العميق ولا الطعام الهنيء والفراش الوثير واللباس النظيف.
يمكن القول إن صاحب المذكرات حين يتحدث عن نفسه، فهو يتحدث عن كل نفــــــس ويصف شعور كل واحد وعواطفه؛ فالحرب تجعل الناس مختلفين وهم متشابهـون، ومتشابهين وهم مختلفون. تقول الحق، الحياة، القوة، الكتب، حقوق الإنسان وحريته، وتقول الحياة شهوة التسلط وغريزة السيطرة ونزعة الاستغلال. والذين يساقون إلى الحرب لا يعرفون دسائس السياسة ولا التزاحم على الرئاسة، فلا تسألوا هذه الحرب عما صنعته بحقوق الإنسان، واسألــوا التاريخ عما صنعته في المجتمعات.
منيت المجتمعات العربية بعامة وبيروت بخاصة بضروب من الحروب والنكبات لو أنزلت على جبل شامخ لتصدّع، ولو أصاب غيرها معشار ما أصابها لدرسـت حضارتها وعفت رسومها.
يخيل لمن يقرأ المذكرات أن صاحبها مغرم بأن يورد بالتفصيل حوادث يومياته، لا يدع شاردة ولا واردة، ما يسوء منها وما يسرّ، ما يبعث القلق وما يوحي بالطمأنينة، ولكنه التاريخ المعيش ممن عايشه وتلظى بناره، على عكس المنظرين والمحلليـن والمعقبين والمراسلين. ويلفت النظر أنَّ صاحب المذكرات لم يدع فيها فراغاً كالذي عرفناه لدى كتبة التاريخ، أي المؤرخين عن بعد من ورود عبارة “بياض في الأصل”؛ فمذكراته لا بياض فيها وهي تغني عن القراءة بين السطور.
لم يشهد عصر من العصور صداماً كالذي شهدته الحرب العالمية الأولى وشقيقتهـا الثانية، وليس في الحرب ما يبعث على الفخر، فالحروب كلها مصيبة وبلاء. طغت الحرب الشاملة على كل شيء، وملكت على الشعوب أهواءهم ومشاعرهم وأفكارهم كافة حتى لم يبق من كان في معزل عنها أو سلم من شرها. فإذا كانت للحروب قواعد وأعراف أخلاقية نظرية إلا أنه لم يكن للمحارب في الواقع أن يتحرج من إثم أو يتعفف عن جرم، فما الحرب إلا القتل والحرق والهدم والنهب.
