إن احتلال واستيطان الأراضي العربية قد فرضا علاقة أمنية أميركية إسرائيلية جديدة، لأنهما أدّيا إلى استمرار حالة الحرب مع العرب في الشرق الأوسط. كما أديا إلى رصد ميزانيات عسكرية ضخمة لسنوات قادمة. والقيام بتنفيذ برامج الأسلحة النووية ومجيء حكومات محافظة في إسرائيل تميل إلى عرض عضلاتها مرة بعد مرة وكان السؤال هو ما إذا كانت حاملة الطائرات الراسية في المنطقة ستصبح مصدر أمن وقوة لليهود المشردين الذين رأوا في إسرائيل ملجأ لهم بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، أم أنها ستصبح بؤرة حقد إقليمي وهدفاً محتملاً لأسلحة تدمير جماعي؟
هذا ما يحاول الصحفي ستيفن غرين من موقعه كصحفي يقترب من أزمة الشرق الأوسط الكشف عنه من خلال كتابه "بالسيف" الذي جاء محتواه بمثابة تقرير عن رحلة جديدة في الأعماق المظلمة للعلاقات الخاصة بين الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل، فبعد أن كشف ستيفن عن العلاقات الأميركية الإسرائيلية وطبيعتها بين عامي 1948-1967 في كتابه السابق "التميز" يحاول في هذا الكتاب تناول هذه العلاقة في المرحلة بين عامي 1968-1987 مستنداً في توثيق معلوماته إلى شهادات حية حصل عليها من أصحابها، فكثرة من المشاركين في الأحداث في هذه الفترة كانوا مستعدين للحوار، هذا جعل أمر توثيق المعلومات سهلاً، أكثر مما كان عليه في كتابه "التميز"، وذلك بتنقله بين الوثائق وذكريات الأشخاص الذين شهدوا هذه الأحداث.
لقد كشف ستيفن في كتابه هذا عن أوجه كثيرة للتعاون الأميركي الإسرائيلي هي بشعة وغير نزيهة أو غير جديرة بالاحترام، وسيكتشف القارئ حينها أن الوجه البشع للعلاقة الأميركية الإسرائيلية لم تكن بداية مع عمليات بيع الأسلحة لغيران كما يعتقد الكثيرون، وإنما أبكر بكثير من هذا التاريخ.
