هذه محاولة لإبراز الدراسات اللغوية لأحد علماء العربية في القرن الرابع الهجري ، وهو أبو عبد الله الحسين بن أحمد بن خالويه ( ت ۳۷۰ه ) ، معتمدة في ذلك على ما وقفت عليه من تراثه : إعراب ثلاثين سورة من القرآن الكريم ، وإعراب القراءات السبع وعللها ، والألفات ، والبديع ، ورسالة في أسماء الريح ، وشرح الفصيح ، وشرح مقصورة ابن دريد ، وليس في كلام العرب ، والمختصر في شواذ [ القراءات ] من كتاب البديع ، وغير ذلك ، فضلاً عما نشر من رسائل لغوية أُخر . وقد استبعدتُ كتاب ( الحجة في القراءات السبع ) لما توفر لي من دلائل تثبت الشك في نسبة هذا الكتاب لابن خالويه ، وسأقف عند ذلك في التمهيد . وكان التوجه الى هذه الدراسة لما عُرِف عن ابن خالويه من مساهمة كبيرة في الدراسات اللغوية ، أكدتها المؤلفات الكثيرة التي تركها ، ولطالما اعتمد الباحثون على كتابية المعروفين : إعراب ثلاثين سورة من القرآن الكريم ، وليس في كلام العرب ، فضلاً عن عدم توفر دراسة لغوية شاملة لجهوده ، ولا أعني بذلك أنه كان غفلاً لم تمتد اليه أنظار الباحثين كشفاً عن جوانب من جهوده اللغوية والنحوية ، وانما كان الهدف تقديم رؤية – أرجو أنْ تكونَ شاملة - لجهوده تلك ، وقد اطلعتُ على بحوث ودراسات حول ذلك فوجدتها لا تتسم بالشمول ، لأنها وُجِّهتْ الى مستوى معين من المستويات اللغوية عنده كالمستوى النحوي في بعض جوانبه ، ووجدت دراستين في هذا الاتجاه : دراسة الدكتور إبراهيم أحمد محمد الادكاوي ( بحث في جهود ابن خالويه النحوية ) ، وما خصصته الباحثة خديجة أحمد مفتي من حديث عن المصطلح النحوي عند ابن خالويه في كتابها ( نحو القراء الكوفيين ) .
