عرض مجمل لما يسمى بعلوم النص ( النحو والبلاغة والنقد الأدبي وأصول الفقه والعروض والقافية ) ولطرق التحليل الخاصة بها . وقد شغل علم النحو بداية من سيبويه ونهاية بالنحاة المتأخرين من شراح المتون النصيب الأوفى من عناية المؤلفين ؛ لأن النظرية اللغوية العربية في تحليل النص نظرية نحوية في جوهرها . والكتاب مَعْنِيٌّ في المقام الأول بالهيكل العام للنظرية اللغوية ؛لأن الذي يشكل وحدة أي علم وطبيعته أن تكون له طريقته المميزة في تحديد المفاهيم وفي تفسير العلاقات . ومع ذلك لــــم يُغفــل المــؤلفــون دراســة السـيــاق الاجـتمــاعــي والتاريخي الذي ظهر فيه هذا التراث . يـوجـه الكتـاب أنـظـار البـاحثين وجـمـهـــور المـثـقـفـيـــن فـــي الغــرب إلــى أن التـراث الــلـــغــوي العــربــي ثــري في مـــادتـــــه ومنهــجــه , وأن المـؤرخين في الغرب لــم يقدروه حـق قـدره ؛لأنــهم لـــــم يتــمـــلـــكــوا الأدوات الضرورية لمعالجته من ذاتـه ولأجل ذاته . ولا تــقـل أهـمــيـة الكـتـاب للقــارئ العـربـي عن أهميته للقارئ الغربـي ، فمن الضروري أن يعـرف القــارئ العربي كيف ينظـر الآخرون إلـــى تراثه , فقد يرون منــه ما لا يرى , وقــد يكتشفون فيه ما لا يتوقعه من طول إلفه له واطمئنانـه إلـى صحـة ما يعـرفه عنه وكفايته.
