ولد الشيخ ناصيف في قرية "كفر شيما" من قري ساحل بيروت في 25 آذار "مارس" سنة 1800 م، وكان والد الشيخ من مشاهير أطباء وإلى جانب ذلك كان يحب الأدب ويميل إليه فيث ذلكفي روع ولده ناصيف فنشأ على محبة العلم وشرع يطالع ما تصل إليه يده من كتب النحو واللغة ودواين الشعراء، فأدب نفسه ينفسه وتخرج على فنون الأدب العربي، وكانت علومه التي أخذ بدراستها: الصرف والنحو والمعاني والبيان والبديع والعروض والقوافي والمنطق والطب والموسيقى مع ما آحصاه في صدره من اللغة حتى كان كأنه القاموس، حيث أثرى المكتبة العربية بالعديد من المؤلفات في الصرف والنحو والبيان والبلاغة والعروض والمنطق والشعر والطب والأدب بما يتجاوز العشرين مؤلفا فضلاً عن المقالات الأدبية والعلمية في المجلات المعروفة في عصره.
