لقد راودنا هذا البحث مرة بعد مرة، وعاود روادنا الكرة بعد الكرة كأنه ضرب من الإبداع الغائب يريد الحضور والإستواء، مع أنه لم يكن أزيد من أفكار ومطالعات ودراسات أخذت تكبر معي كلما كبرت، وتتبلور مناحيها، وتتوارد خواطرها، كلما عدت إلى التراث اللهجي وما يتصل به من أجناس لغوية وأدبية همشت جغرافيا، أو قلل من شأنها قبلياً، أو سكت عنها وعن عزوها لسانياً.
ومن هذا البحث ما هو قديم قدم شروعي في الإهتمام به وقراءته، ومنه ما هو جديد جدة مراجعتي لتلك القراءة القديمة التي تولد منها في ذهني إقتناع بمعظم ما كنت قد أثرته ووقفت عليه من قضايا لغوية ولهجية لدى العرب القدماء من متكلمين أولاً ودارسين ثانياً.
لكن الفكرة الأساسية لهذا البحث ربما كانت أقل شأناً مما تتعلق بهذا الجانب أو ذاك، لأن المسألة بكل بساطة، اني أردت أن أورط فصلاً خاصاً بالجهود العربية القديمة لبيان دورهم وحظهم من علم اللهجات العام أو اللسانيات الجغرافية، وإذا بالفصل ذاك يوحي إلي بإثرائه وتوسيعه ليصير فصولاً، وإذا بعلم اللهجات اللغوي عند العرب يوحي إلي بعلم اللهجات الأدبي، وإذا العنوان "اللسانيات الجغرافية في التراث اللغوي العربي".
ولقد قسمت هذا العمل اللغوي الادبي في ضوء اللسانيات الجغرافية اللغوية والادبية التاريخي والأدبي عند العرب إلى ستة فصول، الفصل الأول: "المستويات الخلفية لظهور اللسانيات الجغرافية عند العرب"، الفصل الثاني: "العربية المشتركة"، الفصل الثالث: "مواقع العربية المشتركة"، الفصل الرابع: "التموضعات الجغرافية للتكلمات اللهجية المحلية"، الفصل الخامس: "معالم اللسانيات الجغرافية في التراث العربي"، الفصل السادس: "علم اللهجات الأدبي".
