بين يديك، سفراً نفيساً، نزجيه إليك ليكون لديك أثيراً، فتضحي لديه مرهوناً وأسيراً. كيف لا وهو لنابغة من علماء المسلمين. وعلم من أعلام المحدثين، ألا وهو الحافظ أبي بكر بن أبي الدنيا، وهو من جهابذة القرن الثالث الهجري الذي امتلأ علماً وحلماً وأثرى موائد العالم بالتصنيف. وأجلى فوائده بالإملاء والتأليف.
فلقد كان إلى جانب تآليفه الضخمة في الحديث وغيره يولي الزهد والرقائق والأخلاق والإشارات والدقائق، اهتماماً بالغاً فقد ألف رسائل في هذه الفنون كثيرة، رائعة ومثيرة. منه في المنامات، والقبر، وذكر الموت، وذم الملاهي، والفرج بعد الشدة، والتوكل على الله، والحلم، ومن عاش بعد الموت، والصمت، والعقل وفضله، وحسن الظن بالله... الخ. وهذا إن دل على شيء فإنما يدل على سعة إطلاعه من الناحية العلمية.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يأتي في إطار الخطب والمواعظ حيث خصصه الإمام أبي الدنيا لموضوع التهجد وقيام الليل، فتحدثاً عن الدعاء عند القيام للتهجد، رفع الصوت بالقرآن في التهجد، من كان يغل نفسه بالليل استكانة لربه، السواك للقيام للتهجد، ذكر القائمين حتى تورمت أقدامهم، أفضل ساعات الليل للتهجد، ثواب المتهجدين، القيام من السحر، فضل مناجاة الله عز وجل، الخ
