موضوع هذا الكتاب جان بول سارتر وفلسفته التى هبت بمثابة إعصار القرن العشرين. ولم يترك مفكر بصماته على أحد القرون مثلما فعل سارتر. ولم يستطع مفكر أن يشغل قرناً بأسره وأن يحول سنواته كلها مثلما فعل سارتر.
يمكن أن تنسب القرون إلى الظواهر الحيوية الفعالة فى حياة الناس. قيل مثلاً أن القرن السابع عشر وهو قرن النهضة وإكتشاف الطباعة وأن القرن الثامن عشر وهو قرن إكتشاف البخار والثورة الفرنسية وأن القرن التاسع عشر وهو قرن التحول الصناعى فالقرن العشرون هو بلا منازع قرن سارتر. وهذه أول مرة ينسب القرن بأكلمه إلى شخص.
وإذا قيل أن القرن العشرين هو قرن سارتر فمعنى ذلك أنه كان سبباً فى كل ما حدث فى هذا القرن العشرين من قلاقل و إضطرابات وثورات فكرية وتحولات إجتماعية وتجمعات طلابية وسياسية.
ولهذا لا يمكن أن يقتصر هذا الكتاب على تقويم سارتر من حيث هو فيلسوف فحسب أو من حيث هو سياسى فقط وإنما ينبغى أن ننظر إليه على أساس إبتكاره لوناً جديداً من الفلسفة الديناميكية التى لا تتطلع إلى فرض نفسها أو التأثير على الواقع على نحو ما تفعل فلسفات الفاعلية بقدر ما تعمد إلى تنمية الواقع. وهذه هى السمة الأصلية فيما نطلق عليه اليوم إسم الفلسفات الديناميكية مثل فلسفات سارتر وأضرابه من الموجوديين.
