تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب في كونه يثير أهم خاصية تميز الفكر السارتري ألا وهي محاولته تقديم الأسس الفلسفية والمتيافيزيقية للإتجاه الفوضوي التي ظلت لدى باقي ممثلي هذا الإتجاه محصورة في الإطار النظري السياسي.
يطور هذا الكتاب هذه الفكرة في مختلف كتابات سارتر الفلسفية والأدبية والسياسية مركزاً على إظهار الحرية بإعتبارها أساس الوجود الإنساني ومبيناً إستمرارية حيوية فكر سارتر داخل مختلف المجتمعات الإنسانية المعاصرة.
لا يتوقف سارتر على التأكيد بأن الحرية هي التي تدفع إلى الإستعباد وأن الحرية هي التي تسمح بالتحرير والتحرر، جاهل لأساس الوجود الإنساني من يسعى إلى إستعباد الإنسان، وملم بهذا الوجود من يأخذ المبادرة بكل ثقة للتصدي لكل مشاريع الإضطهاد والإستغلال.
يوضح هذا الكتاب أن ما يزيد الفكر السارتري أهمية هو تأكيده على التفعيل المستمر للحرية في مراقبة المؤسسات حتى وإن تم بناؤها لضمان حرية الفرد والجماعة، ذلك لأن المؤسسة تميل بطبيعتها إلى تقليص الحرية، بل إلى محوها؛ لهذا فإن ترسيخ الديمقراطية لن يحصل فقط ببناء مجموعة من المؤسسات المستقلة لضمان تجنب تمركز السلطة في يد فرد أو مجموعة من الأفراد، وإنما يستدعي أيضاً توفير تكوين للمواطن يجعله قادراً على الإقتراح والمساهمة والرفض والإستنكار والإنتفاض، أي قادر على أن يكون فعلاً إنساناً حراً واعياً بحريته.
يتنافى الحفاظ على الحرية، حسب فكر سارتر، في أي تنظيم كان، وأساساً في التنظيم السياسي، مع التفويض الأحادي والنهائي، ينبغي أن يكون التفويض محدوداً ومرحلياً ومتبادلاً حتى تضمن الحرية دائماً لذاتها مسألة الفعل، أي المسألة التي تجعلها تعيش فعلاً بإعتبارها حرية.
