يمثل العقاد في حد ذاته وفي شخصه نوعاً من الحس المميز الذي يرتفع عن بقية أنواع الحس المعروف في الأدب والفن والنقد. أي أنه كما يقال في اللغة العربية، يتميز بمعدن مختلف عن معادن بقية النقاد والأدباء والشعراء. وهذا المعدن الذي يتميز به العقاد هو السبب في هذا الخلاف الكبير القائم حوله. لأن الكثيرين يتحدثون عنه وهم لا يعرفونه، أو يتحدثون عنه وهم يحسبون أن استعدادهم وأدواتهم تكفي لأن تكون وسيلة تفاهم أو أسلوب مخاطبة لذلك الرجل.
إلا أن الوقوف على تفصيلات وجزئيات تفكير العقاد وموقفه هو أيسر سبيل للتصوف على عبقريته في طريقة تناوله وفي كيفية الدخول إليه. فأهم شيء هو الإمساك بتلابيب فكر العقاد حقيقة بعد حقيقة، ورأياً بعد آخر، إلى أن نتبين ملامحه، وتظهر ظهوراً ناصعاً يدفع عنها كل لبس ويحميها من سوء المظنة ويقيها شر التخريج والتعليل.
وفي هذا الإطار يأتي هذا العمل الذي يحاول المؤلف من خلاله متابعة العقاد وموازنة فكره وعقله وبمن يصارعونه، واقتفاء آثاره وكتاباته مع الالتقاء في كل حين بشخصه الذي لم يفترق لحظة عن مفهوماته بشأن الأدب والحياة والتذوق. إلى جانب ذلك، فإن هذا العمل البحثي يزمع أن يقرن العقاد الإنسان بالعقاد المفكر، لا تفرق تلك الكلمات بين شخص العقاد وبين آرائه ونظرياته، ولذلك يستحيل أن تكون هذه الدراسة مستقلة عن شخصه أو أن تكون هذه الدراسة متعلقة بفكره وحده دون حياته، أو بعبارة أخرى أدق لم تفرق هذه الدراسة بين العقاد وعالمه الشعري أو الفني، بل هي تلمست كل بذور فكر العقاد من طبيعته الشخصية وتمّ التسلسل معها إلى منتهاها في رفق عسى أن يقنع صاحب هذه الدراسة بأصالة هذا الإنسان العبقري الأديب.
عرف العقاد الرؤية وأدرك سر الإحساس بشيء عميق ممتد الجذور في طيات المرئيات التي نشدها واستل سيفه الماثل في بريق عنينه كي يطوي في نبرات شعره صوراً جميلة جذابة ومعالم حياة رحبة، ويعتز من ثم بالرؤية كحاسة فريدة تصله بالحياة كأكثر من مجرد كونها حياة.
