يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى إطلاع القارئ على أروع ما جاء من الأمثال في مختلف العصور، العصر الجاهلي، الإسلامي، الأموي، العباسي، وعصر الانحطاط. كما ويجمع الكتاب أمثال من الشرق تتضمن ما قيل منها في قارتي آسيا وأفريقيا، وأمثال من الغرب، تتضمن ما قيل منها في قارتي أوروبا وأميركا. والمثل، لغة، هو الشبه، والنظير، واصطلاحاً، هو الحجة والعبرة، والقول السائر بين الناس ممثلاً بمضربه، أي الحالة الأصلية التي ورد فيها الكلام، وهو يدخل مع الآداب والعادات والقصص في ما يعرف بالمأثورات الشعبية والفولكلور.
يغلب على المثل الإيجاز، وإن كان يعبر عن تجربة شخصية واسعة، وخاطرة ذاتية فياضة، أو تجربة اجتماعية أو تاريخية أو إنسانية.
وعلى العموم فإن المثل يتجاوز صاحبه والعصر الذي قيل فيه ليضحي ملكاً لسائر الناس في سائر العصور، ويستشهد به في الآونة المناسبة، والموقف المماثل.
