أدونيس، اتسمت شخصيته بالتناقض والغموض، وانعكس ذلك في نتاجه الشعري. وإذا أردنا -حقاً- أن نقف على الأبعاد النفسية للعملية الإبداعية عند أدونيس فإن علينا أن نتعقبه في ثقافاته المتعددة، وأن نتتبع ينابعها حتى نتمكن من فهمه، لحل طلاسم تشكيلاته اللغوية وألغازها المعماه. وكان أدونيس في نفسه لغزاً، الأمر الذي جعل من يقارب نتاجه الشعري بحاجة إلى التعرف إليه والكشف عن شخصيته، استمع إليه يقول: "إن من يجلس أمامكم على هذا الكرسي شخص تمتلئ ذاكرته بالحفر امتلاء الشوارع، وها أنا بينكم، لكن هذه الحفر التي تنتقل معي تفصلني عنكم. لن يكون لقاؤنا مضيئاً مالم نكشفها.."
ولعل الوقوف على الدلالات التي يحتويها شعر أودنيس هو أعسر وظيفة يضطلع بها الناقد الأدبي، لأن التوجه السريالي، الذي آمن به وصدر عنه تنضاف إليه مصادر أخرى، يشير إلى أن "انفتاح الشعر للفهم هو العدو الأكبر للكشف، لأن مهمة الشاعر الأولى هي إخراج اللفظة من الحيز العقلي، حتى تصبح الكلمة قادرة على أن تعبر عن فعالية الروح وحاجتها" أي تصبح ثورة، وتصبح "لعبة الكلمات" بما فيها من إيحاءات صوتية، أهم بكثير من قيمتها السمانية (الدلالية).
وقد دفعتني عملية الكشف عن دلالاته إلى البحث عن مصادره الثقافية. وسلكت لتحقيق ذلك مسلكاً وصفياً تاريخياً مقارناً لاستقصاء تلك المصادر، حتى وإن أكسب ما استقاه طابعاً خاصاً حاول أن ينحرف به عن أصوله، أو يلونه بلون مغاير، معدلاً من تشكيلات بنيته لينفق مع أغراضه الجديدة.
وعند شروعنا في كشف المؤثرات الظاهرية والخفية في نتاجه الشعري، ألفينا أنفسنا مضطرين إلى سلوك طريقين: أولهما -الوقوف على التنظيرات النقدية التي توزعتها كتبه وأبحاثه وندواته، وما كتب النقاد عنه. وآخرهما -قراءة شعره قراءة نقدية تتيح لنا إدراك خصائصه، والوقوف من خلال مبدعاته، على سلوكه الجمالي.
