في كتابه "العرفان ألم استنارة ويقظة موت" يسعى الشيخ شفيق جرادي للبحث في حقيقة العرفان وإبراز خصائصه من منظور ديني وفلسفي، فالعارف كما عبَر عنه أهل الإختصاص: "هو الذي بذل مجهوده في الله، وتحققت معرفته بما من عند الله، وصح رجوعه من الأشياء إلى الله"، وعلى هذا يصح العارف هو صاحب المعرفة وهي معرفة تحصل بتدخل من الباري سبحانه إذ أشهد الإنسان حقيقة نفسه وفقرها وحاجتها الوجودية إليه.
انطلاقاً من هذا الفهم جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يعتبره مؤلفه "وقفات إنما جاءت بفصولها على خلفية الإبداء لوجهات نظر، قيلت في ظروف شتى وكان الهاجس فيها واحداً.. وهي تحاول أن تصبَ الجهد باتجاه تعريفي للعرفان في المقام الأول... واستجلاء موضوعات تسعى لإبراز الوجهة التي تحملها المعنوية الإسلامية الشيعية، من بين العديد من الإتجاهات الدينية الأخرى... وتبيان قيام النزعة المعنوية والروحية عند الشيعة على القيم الجامعة للأديان وفطرة الله التي فطر الناس عليها".
توزع الكتاب على محاور عديدة تبحث في: التصوف في معاجم الإصطلاحات الصوفية ومعنى الصوفية، والأصول المؤسسة لمسار علم العرفان، ومعنى العرفان والعارف، ونظرة القيصري لموضوع العرفان ومسائله، ودلالات النص عند الآملي وتوظيفه، ودراسة العلاقة بين التجربة النغمية والتقليد الموسيقي الصوفي لها، والمفهوم المسيحي للألم، والمفهوم الإسلامي للألم، والحياة والموت في نظر الإسلام، وآثار النظرة إلى الدنيا والآخرة حسب الثقافة العاشورائية وأخيراً: "يقظة الموت"، ويعرض اتجاهان في قراءة الموت: المستوى الأول: وهو النظر الفلسفي، والمستوى الثاني: التجربة النفسية والإحصائية وهو إشارة لما ورد في كتاب "قلق الموت" لأحمد محمد عبد الخالق من الأسباب الداعية للقلق من الموت...
يسعى هذا الكتاب لإبراز خصائص العرفان بتأصيل ديني وبكونه انعتاقاً تحررياً نحو أفق مفتوح على الحق وحده.
