"نورمان فنكلستاين" كاتب أميركي يهودي، مختص في العلوم السياسية، ولا سيما في الشؤون اليهودية والصراع الإسرائيلي الفلسطيني. حصل على دكتوراه في العلوم السياسية من جامعة برنستون. وعمل في عدد من الكليات والجامعات الأمريكية، وأصدر العديد من الكتب. أثار الكثير من الجدل على خلفية نقده الأكاديمي الحاد لكتّاب بارزين اتهمهم بتحريف الوثائق ليدافعوا عن سياسات إسرائيل وممارساتها. وقد عرف عنه دعمه للقضية الفلسطينية وخوضه في مواضيع حساسة مثل الصهيونية والتاريخ الديموغرافي لفلسطين، فضلاً عن آرائه حول صناعة المحرقة، علمًا أن والديه من الناجين منها. وقد حظي أيضاً بمديح عدد من أبرز المؤرخين من أمثال راؤول هيلبرغ وآفي شليم، فضلاً عن نعوم تشومسكي. تعرض فنكلستاين لضغوط في العمل بسبب آرائه، استقال على إثرها من عمله في جامعة دوبول الأمريكية بشيكاغو عام 2007.
وكتابه "التمادي في المعرفة" كتابٌ صدامي، يخرج عن سطوة اللوبي الصهيوني، وهو يغوص في قضايا اليهود الأميركيين، ويشرِّح بدقةٍ وتفاصيل إحصائيّاتٍ واستفتاءاتٍ واسعة، واقع حياتهم وميولهم ومواقفهم وما طرأ عليها. ويضعهم ضمن تصنيفاتٍ ثلاثة: إثنية ومواطنية وإيديولوجية.
يؤكِّد حقائق دامغة عن تغيُّر مواقف اليهود الأميركيين التي كانت متعاطفة مع الكيان الصهيوني منذ الستينيات، لتصبح الآن معادية أو محايدة في أقل تقدير. ويعزو كل ذلك التغيير إلى الأسباب الآتية: أصبحت إسرائيل عبئاً على أميركا من حيث حجم المساعدات الأميركية لها. ممارسات إسرائيل الوحشية بحق الشعب الفلسطيني. الغزو الإسرائيلي للبنان وتبعاته على الصعيدين المحلي والعالمي. ردود الأفعال الإسرائيلية حيال عملية السلام مع الفلسطينيين وما صاحبها من قمع لانتفاضاتهم المتلاحقة. ويذهب أبعد من ذلك مشيراً إلى أن أعضاء المجتمع الأصغر سناً من الأميركيين اليهود باتوا أقل ارتباطاً أو مقطوعي الصلة بإسرائيل.
كتاب يجابه بقوة مؤلَّفات كبار المدافعين عن الكيان الصهيوني، مثل جيفري غولدبرغ ودنيس روس وسواهما.
