كتاب "الأغاني"، هذه الدرة الغالية في جيد العربية، هو مرجع يرتجى ومتعة تشتهى. فيه التاريخ و القصة والسيرة والعبرة والطرفة والملحة والشعر والنثر واللغة، كل هذا بعبارة فصيحة تحبب إلينا صفاء لغة القرآن وتشدنا إلى استشفافها وتذوقها.
ولكن "الأغاني"، وهو مجموعة ثلاثة وعشرين مجلداً، أصبح اليوم كتاب خزانة لا كتاب مطالعة لضيق وقت الأكثرين عن الانصراف إليه، ناهيك بما حوى من قصص وحوادث تخطاها الزمن فتفهت، ومن أحاديث تكررت أحياناً فثقلت، ومن عبارات فحشت فسمجت حتى لنربأ بابنتنا أو اختنا الطالبة عن الوقوع عليها وقد كتبت في عصر لم يكن للمرأة نصيب في القراءة والمطالعة، ومن أسانيد من مثل: "حدثنا فلان عن فلان عن فلان عن أخيه عن أبيه عن جده..." الخ.. و هذه لو جمعت لما اتسعت لها مجلدات ثلاثة.
ولما كان ثمن هذه المجموعة حفنة، والذين يسخون به قلة، والذين يقرأونها إن سخوا ندرة، ولما كان طلابنا، أبناؤنا وبناتنا، الجامعيون ودونهم، أصبحوا في جوع شديد في اللغة الأصيلة والتعبير الفصيح. ولما كان وقت هؤلاء بالغاً في القصر لكثرة المواد الملقاة على عاتقهم حتى لم يبق لهم متسع ليطالعوا المطولات، هذا إذا استطاعوها شراءً، كل هذا دفع الخوري يوسف عون لاختصار المجلدات الثلاثة والعشرين بمجلد واحد ضم ما يشتهى ضمه وأهمل ما لا يؤسف عليه.
كتاب "أغاني الأغاني" واسمه يدل عليه، وهو أبو الفرج الأصفهاني يبعث حياً بعد ألف سنة ونيف، ولكن بحلة جديدة وثوب قشيب. فأهل الأسانيد والقصص التافهة، والشعر الغث، والتراجم المملة غير المجدية، والبذاءات الفاحشة، وأبقى على التاريخ المفيد، وألقصة الطريفة، والملحة الماتعة، والشعر الشرود، النثر السهل الممتنع من التراجم المشوقة البناءة. وقد حافظ على ترتيب الأجزاء حسب ورودها، على أنه جمع في ترجمة كل شاعر ما وجده شتاتاً في عدة أجزاء مع الإشارة إلى الجزء والصفحة، مع بعض تصرف في التريب تقديماً أو تأخيراً مراعاة أحياناً لأسبقية الزمن. وقد جعل تحت كل تعبير فصيح خطاً ليلفت القارئ والطالب خصيصاً إلى هذا التعبير ليعيه ويختزنه لأوان الكتابة أو الخطابة.
