أشرق كتاب "الأغاني" من صنعة أبي الفرح الأصفهاني في سماء كتب الأدب العربي قمراً أرسل ضوءه الهادئ على ربوع الحياة الأدبية ما يزيد على ألف عام، بقي خلالها ينير الطريق لأهل اللغة والبلاغة والبيان ورواد الأخبار والسير وعشاق الشعر وقصاد الغناء والطرب.
واستمرت أجيال هؤلاء جميعاً على ورود حوض هذا الكتاب النفيس، تنهل منه نهل الظامئ، بل تتضلع من مورده حتى مخ العظام. وأحس الشعراء والأدباء بأنه مصدر واسع الأرجاء غزير المادة كثير الأمثال، يستوفي الطالب منه حاجته مهما كان حجمها، فقد صرف له صاحبه جهداً كبيراً حتى جمع معلوماته في تلك المجلدات العديدة.
وكان يستقصي خبر الشاعر أو الخليفة أو الجارية أو المغنية أو المغني في الموقف الواحد، فيذكر معظم روايات ذلك الخبر حرصاً منه على أن ينقل كل ما يعرفه وما يصل إليه حتى يقدم عطاءً شاملاً في الأدب يستغني به طالبوه عن سواه.
وقد نجح الأصفهاني في محاولته عندما انتهى من تأليف كتابه، فأصدره أحسن إصدار، وألبسه أجمل حلة، أعجبت الأدباء الملوك والشعراء الفحول، فبات زوادة الأديب الظاعن، ومرجع الشاعر القاطن، وملاذ المغني المطرب، فأياً من يلجأ إليه يجد فيه حاجته، ويحقق في أبحاثه وأخباره طلبته...
ولكن رغم هذه الميزات والمحاسن لم يكن هذا الكتاب القدير نظيف الأخبار صحيح جميع الأنباء سالم كل الأفكار صادق سائر الإسناد، كما يجب أن يكون ليبقى شمساً مشرقة في سماء نقية، لا تشوبها ولو سحابة صيف.. وإنما تطرق الضعف إلى بعض رواياته، وظهر الفساد في جانب من أخباره، فأدى ذلك إلى سقوط هيبته من نفوس طائفة من الأدباء، وضعفت الثقة به عند بعض العلماء، حتى أصبح الحذر منه في نظرهم واجباً.
وليس فيما نذكره حيف على كتاب "الأإاني" رغم سمو كعبه بين كتب الأدب، وذيوع صيته بين العجم والعرب، فتلك حقيقة، وإن كانت وقاسية على نفوس طلابه وعشاق قراءته، ولكنها تبقى حقيقة ثابتة فيه، لا تقبل الإنكار.
وفي هذا الكتاب جولة قصيرة هادئة في بعض أرجاء كتاب "الأغاني" لاستيضاح ما سبق قوله وهي: تكفي للحصول على فكرة واضحة عنه.
