"نحن ذاكرون في كتابنا هذا إن شاء الله وأيّد منه بعون وإرشاد جملاً من أخبار من قتل من ولد أبي طالب منذ عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الوقت الذي ابتدأنا فيه هذا الكتاب، وهو في جمادى الأولى سنة ثلاث عشرة وثلثمائة للهجرة ومن احتيل في قتله منهم بسمٍّ وكان سبب وفاته، ومن خاف السلطان وهرب منه فمات في تواريه، ومن ظفر به فحبس حتى هلك في محبسه، على السياقة لتواريخ مقاتل من قتل منهم، ووفاة من توفي بهذه الأحوال، لا على قدر مراتبهم في الفضل والتقدم.
ومقتصرون في ذكر أخبارهم على من كان محمود الطريقة، سديد المذهب، لا من كان بخلاف ذلك، أو عدل عن سبيل أهله ومذاهب أسلافه، او كان خروجه على سبيل عيثٍ وإفساد.
وعلى أنا لا ننتفي من أن يكون الشيء من أخبار المتأخرين منهم فاتنا ولم يقع إلينا، لتفرقهم في أقاصي المشرق والمغرب، وحلولهم في نائي الأطراف وشاسع المحال التي يتعذر علينا إستعلام أخبارهم فيها، ومعرفة قصصهم لإستيطانهم إياها سيما مع قصور زماننا هذا وأهله، وخلوه من مدون الخبر، أو ناقل الأثر، كما كان المتقدمون قبلهم يدونون ويصنفون وينظمون ويرصفون، ومن اعترف بالتقصير خلا من التأنيب.
وجاعلون ما نؤلفه في هذا الكتاب ونأتي به، على أقرب ما يمكننا من الإختصار ونقدر عليه من الإقتصار، وجامعون فيه ما لا يستغنى عن ذكره من أخبارهم وسيرهم ومقاتلهم وقصصهم؛ إذ كان إستيعاب ذلك وجمعه من طرقه ووجوهه يطول جداً ويكثر ويثقل على جامعه وسامعه، والإختصار لمثل هذا أخف على الحامل والناقل"... انتهى.
