يشكل كتاب الأغاني لأبي الفرج الأصفهاني (356-967م) مادة متنوعة لأكثر من موضوع أو عنوان، وموضوع الطرائف فيه غنيّ وواسع، ومادته شيّقة يستطيع المتأمل فيها أن يجد لذة ممتعة وهو يغوص في بحرها. فهي متنوعة وشاملة فيها فنون الشعر والتاريخ، والموسيقى والغناء والرقص، وفيها أخبار المناومة والسّير والأحاديث المسندة وعلم الطب والنجوم والأشربة وأخبار العرب واللغة والأدب والآثار، وعادات العرب وتقاليدهم، وسير الشعراء على اختلاف مراتبهم وتأثيرهم وخطوتهم لدى الخلفاء.
وفيها أخبار الملوك والخلفاء والأمراء والقوّاد والتهتك والزندقة، وأخبار الصداقة والوفاء والتسامح والفضيلة والحث على عمل الخير والمعروف، وأخبار الطمع، وغير ذلك كثر كثير... وباختصار فإن طرائف أبي الفرج ونوادره ذخيرة من الأخبار عن جميع مناحي حياة العرب الاجتماعية تقريباً، استطاع أبو الفرج الأصفهانى أن يسجلها لنا في دقة الوصف وبساطة التعبير وسهولة الصياغة، وروعة التصوير حتى تجد نفسك وأنت تقرأها وكأنك أمام فيلم سينمائي طويل مضحك ومسل لا يمل منه المشاهد ولا يشعر معه بمرور الوقت لأن عنصر المفاجأة فيه غنيّ، فلا يكاد تمر طرفة مضحكة حتى تتبعها نادرة أشد إضحاكاً وكلها تدور حول موضوعات تاريخية مهمة ومتنوعة يجعل بالمتأدبين معرفتها والاطلاع عليها لأنها صورة صادقة عن أساليب الحياة المعيشية عند العرب في عصري الجاهلية والإسلام. ولأهمية كتاب الأغاني عني المحقق بإعادة جمع مادة هذا الكتاب في هذه النسخة التي بين أيدينا، حاذفاً من المادة الأصلية الألفاظ غير الأخلاقية وتلك التي تجرح الحياء وتخدش الشعور والمشاعر، وشارحاً ما يحتاج من الألفاظ إلى شرح وبيان، ومكملاً مادة النص بعناوين عامة تسهل على القارئ فهم ما يتم شرحه.
هو كتاب في الأدب العربي، وهو مختارات من كتابه الأغاني لأبي فرج الأصفهاني جمعها المؤلف واختار أطرفها، فكان الكتاب ذخيرة من الأخبار عن جميع مناحي حياة العرب الإجتماعية، ينقلها لنا المصنف في دقة الوصف وبساطة التعبير وكأنك تعيش تلك الحياة بشقيها الجاهلي والإسلامي، بأسلوب مسل ومضحك وغني بالمعلومات
