يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى توجيه الضوء نحو الجهود التي تُبذل في سبيل تطوير التربية في العالم وقد جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب منذ عام 1988 عندما تشرفت - كأوّل عربي - يقوم بالكتابة لمنظمة اليونسكو كتابها السنوي "التربية في العالم" باللغة الإنجليزية وترجمته المنظمة إلى اللغة الفرنسية والإسبانية ومنذ ذلك اليوم وأنا أتطلع أن أقدم للمكتبة العربية كتاباً جامعاً شاملاً لأنظمة التربية والتعليم في العالم وتضع بعض الأمثلة البسيطة لهذه الأنظمة.
وقد تحقق هذا الحلم وذلك بفضل توفيق الله تعالى ومساعدته لنا تم بفضل تدريسي لطلاب مرحلة الدكتوراه في جامعة أم القرى بالمملكة العربية السعودية (مادة المناهج المقارنة) سبعة عشر عاماً من عام 1409هـ إلى 1426هـ فلهم الشكر كذلك على ما بذلوه معي من تفاعل وبحث ودراسة وتقديم مشورة.
أما طلابي في جامعة الملك سعود وجامعة الملك خالد وجامعة الكويت فإنني مدين لهم بكثير من الأفكار التي كانت تدور بيننا في معرض النقاش.
وكلي ثقة وأمل في الله عزّ وجلّ أن يسد هذا الكتاب في حلّته الراهنة نقصاً ملحوظاً في مكتبتنا العربية حول نظم التربية والتعليم في العالم ويلبي إحتياجات الطلاب بصورة عامة وعلى وجه الخصوص طلاب كليات التربية والمعلمين من العالم العربي وكذلك جميع المهتمين بأمور التربية والتعليم في البلدان العربية خاصة.
