إن المعلم الكفء يعرف ما ينوي تدريسه ولماذا يدرسه وكيف يقوم بذلك، فالمعلم الكفء يتوخى الدقة من التخطيط وهو على إستعداد للمخاطرة بأفكار جديدة وتحمل المسؤولية الكاملة عن كل ما يقوم به، وإعداد الدرس مهم للمعلم لأنه يعتبر مرشدٍّ للمدرس وضرورياً لإعداد الأنشطة التعليمية اللازمة ولتجنب الإعداد المتعجل غير المنسق ولضمان تماسك وتناسق الإعداد مع محتوى المنهج، لا بد أن يتعرف المعلم على المحتوى ويحدده ويدخل في إعتباره طبيعة تلاميذه ويدرك الدرس إدراكاً كاملاً.
إن إعداد الدرس اليومي عملية تسير في خط موازٍ لإعداد خطة المنهج طويلة المدى، ولا يوجد شكل واحد أمثل لخطة الدرس يناسب جميع المعلمين، والأمر متروك لكل مدرس بما لديه من رؤية عملية لإختيار شكل من الأشكال المناسبة للمادة، على أنه يجب على المعلم أن يقيم إختياره على الإعتبارات الآتية: "المادة والمحتوى الذي ينوي تدريسه"، "طرق التدريس أو المعالجة التي سيستخدمها"، "قدرات التلاميذ وإهتماماتهم".
وهذا الكتاب فيه إضاءات للمعلم بدأت بأهم الجوانب الأساسية في التدريس ثم بالأهداف والتقويم ثم بالتقنية التي يمكن أن يستخدمها المعلم في تدريسه وانتهت ببعض التطبيقات العملية للتدريس الفعال.
