مقدمة:
العنوان عبارة عن إشارة ساخرة إلى الشخصية المركزية في الرواية، ليف نيكولايفيتش ميشكين ، ذلك الأمير الشاب الذي أدى طيبته وبساطته المنفتحة وسذاجته إلى افتراض العديد من الشخصيات الأكثر دنيوية التي يواجهها خطأً و أنه يفتقر إلى الذكاء والبصيرة. في شخصية الأمير ميشكين، و حدد دوستويفسكي لنفسه مهمة تصوير "الرجل الإيجابي والجميل". و تدرس الرواية عواقب وضع مثل هذا الفرد الفريد في قلب الصراعات والرغبات والعواطف والأنانية في المجتمع الدنيوي، سواء بالنسبة للرجل نفسه أو لأولئك الذين يتعامل معهم.
و يصف جوزيف فرانك رواية "الأبله " بأنها "أكثر أعمال دوستويفسكي الكبرى شخصية، وهو الكتاب الذي يجسد فيه قناعاته الأكثر حميمية وعزيزة ومقدسة". و يتضمن وصفًا لبعض محنته الشخصية الشديدة، مثل الصرع والإعدام الوهمي ، ويستكشف الموضوعات الأخلاقية والروحية والفلسفية المترتبة عليها. و كان دافعه الأساسي في كتابة الرواية هو إخضاع مثله الأعلى، وهو الحب المسيحي الحقيقي، لبوتقة المجتمع الروسي المعاصر.
