تعتبر رواية الأبله واحدة من روايات دوستويفسكي التي لاقت شهرة واسعة، كما لاقت إقبالًا لا يزال مستمرًا بحيث تتكرر طبعاتها بكل لغات العالم.
كمعظم أعمال دوستويفسكي، تغوص هذه الرواية في النفس البشرية وصراعتها الداخلية، حيث نرى ذلك التكثيف للمشاعر والرغبات، وقد اختار دوستويفسكي شخصياتها من نماذج هي عبارة عن كتلة من النزعات والمعاناة، فالأمير ميشكين مصاب بنوع من الصرع، وفي الوقت نفسه يتميز بطيبة قلب واستعداد للتضحية وإبداء التسامح برضى حتى أطلق عليه لقب "الأبله"
تبدأ الرواية في تقديم صورة عن حياة الأميرة، وهي صورة عن المجتمع الروسي، وذلك قبل أن يذهب لزيارة قريبته في بطرسبرغ ويتعرف على بناتها ويعيش دوامة من العواطف التي تؤثر على حياته.
في هذه الرواية، كما في معظم رواياته، يصب دوستويفسكي شيئًا من نفسه ومن أفكاره ومن حياته، ينعكس ذلك في شخصيات الرواية، وخاصة شخصية الأمير الذي يعيش الصراع بين حبّه لـ "آجلايا"، وهي حبّه الحقيقة مع أنها تسخر منه دائمًا ولكنها تحبه، وحبه لـ "اناستاسيا" المرغوبة من الجميع، والتي يحبها بروح التعاطفمع أنه يصفها بالمعتلة والمريضة.
إن ترجمة سامي الدروبي، ليست مجرد نقل نص إلى العربية، بل هي إبداع مترجم عشق أعمال دوستويفسكي، فنقل لنا ترجمة مبدعة أقرّ القراء دوستويفسكي بالعربية بأنها لا تُضاهى.
