"لماذا تخلق الطبيعة أفضل الناس لتسخّرَ منهم بعد ذلك؟... أنا لم أفسد أحداً..لقد أردت أن أحيا لسعادة الناس جميعهم.. لإكتشاف الحقيقة ونشرها.. ماذا كانت النتيجة؟ لا شيء! كانت النتيجة أنكم تحتقرونني، هذا دليل على أنني أحمق". بهذه العبارات يتحدّث الأمير ميشكين عن نفسه، تلك النفس التي تبدو ضعيفة أما جبروت البشر، بلهاء أمام المكر، بسيطة أمام التفاخر، غيبة أمام الرياء، هشّة امام الظلم. ورائعة وقويّة وقادرة إزاء مشاعر الخير والحبّ والصداقة. "الأبله" واحد من نماذج دوستويفسكي الإنسانية العظيمة.
