كان يذهب إلى المدرسة حاملاً كتبه في "حمّال" من قماش الخام، لا مظلة تحمي رأسه وجسده أيام المطر، بينما ينتعل "جزمة" من الكاوتشوك طيلة فصل الشتاء، وحذاءً واحداً لباقي الفصول يبقى لصيق قدميه حتى يبرى أو يضيق، فيشتري له والده حذاءً بديلاً. كان ورفاقه يجتمعون في غرفة واحدة اسمها "المدرسة"، أعمار متفاوتة من ست سنوات إلى ثلاث عشرة سنة لأن من تجاوز هذا السن يذهب لمساعدة أهله في الحقول حيث تحصل عملية "مبادأته" لعالم الكبار، لكن من دور أي إستقلال مالي، وعندما لا يكون لدى العائلة عمل تكلفه به، فإنه يعمل لدى فلاح آخر مقابل أجر محدد. بدأ جميل سلوك هذه الطريق كأترابه في الضيعة منذ أرسله أهله إلى المدرسة حيث العلم فيها ليس "علماً" بمعنى الكلمة، فمعلم واحد عليه تدريس التلاميذ جميعاً مقسماً إياهم مجموعات بحسب السنّ، بينما اقتصرت الكتب على ثلاثة: لغة عربية، وحساب، و"دروس أشياء"، هكذا كانت تسمى مادة العلوم آنذاك، وكانت كتاب اللغة الفرنسية غير موجود لأن المعلم لا يحسن هذه اللغة.
